Nuclear Case Study
St. Lucie Nuclear Generating Station
INDUSTRY: Nuclear
APPLICATION: Spent Fuel Cask Handling
PRODUCT: :Two (2) Single Failure Proof 150 Ton Cask Handling Cranes
SERVICES: Design, Manufacture, Installation, Quality and Load Testing
THE CHALLENGE
To upgrade two (2) cranes to meet regulatory standards, along with increased capacity requirements necessary for dry spent fuel storage.
THE SOLUTION
American Crane designed, manufactured, installed, tested, and provided training for the complete rebuild of these two (2)
150-ton single failure-proof cask handling cranes.
THE RESULT
NUREG-0554, NUREG-0612, ASME NOG-1 and 10 CFR 50, Appendix B. Related activities included structural analysis of crane
runway and building structure, including identifi cation of required building modifi cations to accommodate the increased
loadings imposed on the building as a result of the crane upgrade.

Top 5 Safety Mistakes We See During Field Inspections (and How to Fix Them)
At American Crane & Equipment Corporation, field inspections are a core part of how we support safe, reliable lifting operations. While most facilities take safety seriously, inspections often reveal the same preventable issues—small oversights that can lead to downtime, equipment damage, or injury if left unaddressed. The good news? These…
What Goes Into the Engineering Process of a Custom Crane
Every custom crane starts with a simple idea: solve a lifting challenge that standard equipment can’t fully address. From there, the engineering process becomes a collaborative, highly detailed journey that balances performance, safety, and real-world constraints. Designing a custom crane isn’t about reinventing lifting—it’s about refining it to fit a…
What Is a Telescopic Outage Jib Crane and Why It Matters for Nuclear Power Plants
Containment buildings aren’t designed for convenience. They’re designed for safety, redundancy, and control. During nuclear refueling and maintenance outages, that reality creates a familiar challenge: core components must be lifted, positioned, and removed in spaces where access is limited and conditions are constantly changing. That’s where a telescopic outage jib…
Comparing Single-Phase and Three-Phase Electric Chain Hoists
Choosing the right electric chain hoist isn’t just about capacity — it starts with understanding the power available in your facility. One of the most common questions during hoist selection is whether single-phase or three-phase power is the better fit. While both options play an important role in material handling,…
5 Common Mistakes Companies Make When Specifying a Custom Crane
Specifying a custom crane isn’t something most companies do every day. It’s a big decision, a long-term investment, and when done right, a game changer for safety and productivity. But because it’s not routine, it’s easy to miss a few key details along the way. Over the years, some common…
Benefits of Single-Phase Electric Chain Hoists for Facilities Without Three-Phase Power
For many facilities — especially older buildings, smaller shops, maintenance bays, and light industrial environments — three-phase electrical service simply isn’t available. Installing or upgrading to three-phase power can be costly and complex, often involving utility coordination, panel upgrades, and downtime. That’s where single-phase electric chain hoists become a practical,…
Recruiting Skilled Trades in a Changing Market
As we look back on this past year leading our recruitment efforts for skilled labor manufacturing roles, one word keeps coming to my mind… DIVERGENCE Across our region, many local companies have scaled back their workforce. On paper, that might sound like it should make hiring easier right? More available…
Understanding Crane Duty Cycles and Why They Matter
When selecting an overhead crane or hoist system, capacity often takes center stage. How much weight can it lift? How high? How far? But there’s another factor that is just as important and often overlooked: duty cycle. Understanding crane duty cycles is essential for ensuring safety, reliability, and long-term performance.…
What Manufacturing Plants Must Know for 2026
Upgrading Aging Hoist Equipment: What Manufacturing Plants Must Know for 2026 For many manufacturing facilities, the new year is prompting a fresh look at their equipment and whether they can keep pace with current production and safety needs. Equipment that once felt adequate is now showing its age, especially as…
The Most Critical Asset in Manufacturing Leadership
When you walk through a manufacturing plant, it’s easy to focus on equipment first and all the technology that keeps materials moving. But as FXV Digital Design founder and “Big Cheese”, Freddy Vasquez, reminds us in Episode 2 of Karen Norheim’s podcast, Always Lifting, none of it works without people. Freddy’s…
