Nuclear Case Study
St. Lucie Nuclear Generating Station
INDUSTRY: Nuclear
APPLICATION: Spent Fuel Cask Handling
PRODUCT: :Two (2) Single Failure Proof 150 Ton Cask Handling Cranes
SERVICES: Design, Manufacture, Installation, Quality and Load Testing
THE CHALLENGE
To upgrade two (2) cranes to meet regulatory standards, along with increased capacity requirements necessary for dry spent fuel storage.
THE SOLUTION
American Crane designed, manufactured, installed, tested, and provided training for the complete rebuild of these two (2)
150-ton single failure-proof cask handling cranes.
THE RESULT
NUREG-0554, NUREG-0612, ASME NOG-1 and 10 CFR 50, Appendix B. Related activities included structural analysis of crane
runway and building structure, including identifi cation of required building modifi cations to accommodate the increased
loadings imposed on the building as a result of the crane upgrade.

When History Rolls Through Town
Most pieces of history sit quietly behind glass. This one announces itself with a whistle you can hear for miles. On July 2, Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 will make a brief whistle stop in Pottstown, giving our community the chance to see the world’s largest operating steam…
4 Critical Standards for Defense Crane Systems: A Zero-Tolerance Guide
Defense crane systems at DOD facilities demand more than lifting capacity. Learn how precision, documentation, and custom engineering eliminate risk in high-consequence environments.
Best Overhead Cranes for SMR Facilities: A Complete Guide
Overhead cranes for SMR facilities aren't one-size-fits-all. From polar cranes in reactor buildings to gantry cranes in modular construction yards, each zone of a Small Modular Reactor plant requires a different lifting solution. Learn which crane types are used where — and how engineers select the right system for safety-critical…
SMR Crane Systems: 4 Infrastructure Challenges for Small Modular Reactors
Everyone's talking about small modular reactors but who's thinking about how the components get moved? Here's why SMR crane systems matter more than most people realize.
Crane IoT Monitoring: Why 79% of Facilities Are Dangerously Behind on Predictive Maintenance
Most crane operators still depend on scheduled inspections — but that reactive approach is costing facilities more than they realize. With 79% of facilities falling behind on predictive maintenance, the gap between what IoT monitoring can do and what most operations are actually doing has never been wider. Crane IoT…
What Is It Like to Work at American Crane as a Woman in Engineering or Manufacturing?

Engineering and manufacturing careers can offer highly rewarding work, but…
Idle Overhead Crane Inspection: What OSHA Requires Before Restart
An overhead crane inspection is still required by OSHA even when equipment has been sitting idle for weeks or months. No load. No movement. No operator. No immediate problem. That assumption is exactly what creates compliance issues when equipment is brought back online after weeks or months of inactivity. Under…
Why Skilled Engineers Are Choosing American Crane: Real Work, Visible Impact, Zero Cookie-Cutter Projects
TL;DR At American Crane, engineers and tradespeople work on custom-engineered lifting systems for nuclear facilities, semiconductor plants, aerospace programs, and defense operations. Projects are rarely the same twice. Teams stay involved from initial design through testing, installation, and long-term service with individual contributions that are visible and directly tied to…
The Overhead Crane Inspection Checklist Your OSHA Auditor Actually Uses — and the 5 Critical Documentation Gaps That Catch Most Facilities Off Guard
If your facility uses overhead cranes, having a reliable overhead crane inspection checklist isn’t optional. There’s a good chance your equipment is being inspected more often than your paperwork is. That’s a problem. When OSHA reviews crane safety programs, inspectors are not just looking at hooks, wire rope, limit switches,…
How Data-Driven Lifting Is Reshaping Plant Performance
Walk into almost any manufacturing facility today and you’ll see automation everywhere—robotics, connected systems, real-time dashboards. But one area evolving just as quickly, often behind the scenes, is material handling. Cranes are no longer just moving loads from point A to point B. They’re becoming data-generating assets that help plants…
