Oil, Gas, and Mining Case Study
Conoco Phillips Alaska
INDUSTRY: Oil, Gas and Mining
APPLICATION: Explosion Proof and Hazardous Environments
PRODUCT: 3 Ton Auxiliary Hoist Running on Monorail Beam
SERVICES: Design, Manufacture, Installation, Quality and Load Testing
THE CHALLENGE
To speed up the process of handling maintenance equipment. The equipment is lift ed by the hoist of an explosion-proof crane, located inside one of Conoco Phillip’s power plants.
THE SOLUTION
American Crane designed, manufactured and installed an additional monorail beam complete with a 3 ton auxiliary hoist. The design included the following non-sparking components: bronze wheels, festoon and intrinsically safe components, such as pendant station, wireless remote system and explosion-proof radio system.
THE RESULT
Adding the beam and monorail hoist safely accelerated the pace of equipment handling within the plant and supplying an additional hook provided expanded coverage in critical areas. The hoist design complied with all mandated national electric codes, including Class I; Division I; Article 501. In addition, an analysis was conducted of fixed building equipment to determine obstruction avoidance in regard to the path of the new hoist.

Material Handling Challenges in Advanced Chip Manufacturing Facilities
Material handling tends to get less attention than the process tools themselves—but in semiconductor manufacturing, it plays a direct role in how smoothly everything else operates, particularly in advanced chip manufacturing environments. If you’re involved in building, expanding, or maintaining one of these facilities, you’ve likely already run into the…
Why ACECO Partners with Duct-O-Wire
Most crane issues don’t start with the crane itself. They tend to originate in the systems behind it—the components responsible for delivering power, carrying signals, and keeping everything moving as intended. When those elements are inconsistent, the impact shows up quickly. Motion becomes less predictable, wear accelerates, and small inefficiencies…
Hoist Up! Investing in the Next Generation of Skilled Trades
At American Crane & Equipment Corporation, we spend a lot of time thinking about performance—how systems operate, how facilities stay productive, and how teams get the job done safely and efficiently. But behind every successful lift, installation, and operation is something even more important: people. Skilled, capable, and committed people.…
Women in Manufacturing — A Legacy of Strength and Innovation
Manufacturing has long been associated with grit, precision, and ingenuity. Across generations, the industry has depended on the skill and dedication of the people who design, fabricate, and build the equipment that keeps it moving. Women have been an important part of that workforce—from the massive industrial mobilization of World…
High-Stakes Lifting in Nuclear & Telescopic Outage Operations: What Needs to Be Considered
High-Stakes Lifting in Nuclear & Telescopic Outage Operations: What Needs to Be Considered When a nuclear plant enters an outage—planned or unexpected—every hour matters. Fueling systems, dry cask loading, large component replacements, and crane modernization all require lifts that go far beyond standard plant logistics. These lifts happen in confined…

Replace or Modernize? How to Decide When an Overhead Crane Needs an Upgrade
In many manufacturing facilities, overhead cranes are some of the hardest-working assets on the floor. They move heavy loads daily, support production flow, and often operate for decades with proper maintenance. Eventually, though, every plant manager faces the same question: Is it better to modernize an existing crane or replace…
When Labor Is Tight, Lean Manufacturing Delivers More with Less
Across manufacturing, one challenge continues to shape operational decisions: workforce availability. Skilled trades are harder to find, experienced employees are retiring, and hiring timelines are longer than many production schedules can tolerate. For many organizations, the question is no longer how to grow headcount — it’s how to sustain output…
How Custom Material Handling Solutions Improve Safety and Productivity on the Shop Floor
Material handling rarely gets the spotlight in manufacturing strategy meetings, yet it influences nearly every aspect of daily operations. How materials move — and how confidently they move — affects not only throughput, but the physical well-being of the people on the floor. In many facilities, lifting systems are added…
Understanding Cleanroom Standards in Semiconductor Manufacturing
Semiconductor manufacturing is one of the most exacting industries in modern engineering — and not just because of what happens on a silicon wafer. Maintaining an environment that meets strict cleanroom standards is essential for producing reliable, high-yield chips. But while most discussions focus on air quality, filtration, and particulate…
