This grapple will be used to move canisters that hold low and high level nuclear waste (sometimes called βspent fuelβ) to transport casks to and from nuclear storage waste facilities. Stainless steel is the material of choice when moving or storing nuclear waste, because of its corrosion-resistant properties.
